South Bend Tribune 2/4/2000
John Edward Valentine, 61, son of Wallace E. Valentine and Helen Wedow Valentine, born on Dec. 9, 1938, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 2, while in his home being cared for and comforted by loved ones. Born in Michigan City, Ind., John resided in New Carlisle, Ind., with his loving wife and companion, Barbara Hable-Valentine, having joined in marriage in 1991.
John raised a family of four children with his former wife, JoAnn Valentine-Pevitts, all of whom currently reside in Florida, having moved there in 1973. John and his family spent several years living in Indiana, Arizona, Michigan and Florida, and finally settled in New Carlisle. He was a loving and faithful provider as a husband and a father. He developed his occupational skills in the field of heavy machinery and construction, partner-owner of United Asphalt Pavers with longtime friend, Wayne Speakman, and most recently as a tractor/trailer owner-operator.
In concert with his heart and desires, his four children who survive him, Rick (Patti) Robertson (43), Ross (Harriet) Robertson (40), Troy (Pam) Valentine (37) and Tina Valentine (34), were able to be at his side during the last days of a year-long battle with lung cancer. John Edward Valentine is survived by his wife Barbara; his four children, Rick, Ross, Troy and Tina; three sisters, Donna Cuma of Michigan City, Ind., Penny (Mike) Olgetree of Florida and Alberta (Kent) Carter of LaPorte, Ind.; former wife and mother of his children, JoAnn Valentine-Pevitts; seven nieces and nephews; 10 grandchildren; and by his faithful black lab, Bubba.
During the last months of his battle against cancer John was able to care for his personal details to prepare his family for his home-going. His personal wishes of cremation and having his remains placed at the feet of his father's grave at Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan City were carried out by the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 201 S. Filbert Street, New Carlisle. A private memorial service was held in the chapel and was led by Rev. Geist of the First Congregational Church of Michigan City. Earlier in the month of January, pastoral visits were made at John's request. Rev. Dr. Ernie Geist led John in prayer to make peace with God and accepted his eternal forgiveness and love. (Ephesians 2:8-9) Rev. Geist baptized John there in his home on Jan. 24, 2000.
John and his family thank all of their closest friends and family who prayed for a peaceful passing after a brave year-long battle. Prayers were answered and he was with family, in his home, and went to sleep with God's peace. The family also wishes to thank Hospice of St. Joseph County, and request that a memorial gift be designated to them in John's name to help continue services to loved ones in need.
