James Ullery

SOUTH BEND - James "Jack" Ullery, 82, of South Bend, IN, passed away in his home on Sunday, May 20, 2007. James was born August 18, 1924, in South Bend, IN, to the late Russell and Mildred (Birtwhistle) Ullery. He attended Lakeville High School. Jack then entered the Army in April 1943. He was most proud of his military service in the 532nd Engineers Boat and Shore Regiment in the Asiatic Pacific for 23 months. He received an AP Theatre Ribbon W/2 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon W/2 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged honorably in January 1946. Jack worked at Studebaker's after being discharged from the Army. He later worked for Walsh & Kelley as an operating engineer till 1987. He was a long-standing member of the Lydick Lions, American Legion Post 357.

 

James married Gloria (June) Stebner on May 1, 1948. They were married for 57 years. Gloria passed on October 5, 2005. Also preceding him in death was his son, Todd Ullery. James and Gloria had five children, Tara (Ullery) Oberlander of Three Rivers, MI, Robin (Ullery) Johnson of Eagle River, AK, (husband Michael), Kevin Ullery of South Bend, IN, (wife Sharon), Kelly Ullery of South Bend, IN, (wife Carrie), and a daughter-in-law, Becky Ullery of South Bend. Other survivors include his sister, Marjorie Wegenka of South Bend, IN; an aunt, Esther Parmely of New Carlisle, IN; an aunt, Mary Bilheimer of South Bend, IN; an uncle, Donald (Doc) Ullery of South Bend, IN; 10 grandchildren, Randy Stinnett, Tammy Johnson, Jimmy Stinnett, Nora Johnson, Wesley Johnson, twins: Kyle and Travis Ullery, Erik Ullery, Kollin Ullery and Kalon Ullery; eight great-grandchildren, Nathan, Ivan, Jaden, Jayme, Jenifer, Jaleah, Remy Ann and Sofia Milan.

 

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 25, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., South Bend, IN 46616. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lydick Lions, c/o Bruce Stickley, 54292 Quince Road, South Bend, IN 46628.
