SOUTH BEND - Jesse E. Turnage, 91, of Palmetto, FL, formerly of
South Bend, passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2010, in Bradenton,
FL. He was born on August 5, 1918, in Meridian, MS, to the late
Elyah Arthur and Avery Marie (Bounds) Turnage. On December 27,
1939, he married Gladys M. Williams, who preceded him in death on
November 19, 2003. He was also preceded in death by sisters,
Margie and Eula Mae; and four brothers, Frank, Dub, Lige and
Rudolph Turnage. Jesse is survived by his daughters, Marie
(James) Cleveland of Hinkley, OH, and Linda (Larry) Paul of
Palmetto; his son, Robert E. (Roberta) Turnage of Mishawaka, IN;
seven grandchildren, Peggy (Jeff) MacCurdy, Debbie (Brian)
Miller, James (Molly) Cleveland, Laura (Richard) Weller, Loren
(Jennifer) Paul, Jason Turnage and Justin (Elizabeth) Turnage; 13
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eloise Burke of Collinsville,
MS. Mr. Turnage worked as a machinist at Wheelabrator for 30
years before retiring in 1980. Jesse loved and respected the
outdoors his entire life. He was an avid hunter and fisherman in
his youth. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937, and
was a proud WW II Navy veteran who served in the Pacific. He
lived in South Bend over 50 years, and spent the last six years
in Florida surrounded by family. Funeral services for Jesse will
be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2010, in the Kaniewski
Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. Friends may visit
for two hours prior to the services. Burial will follow at
