Lowell R. Tully Sr., 82, of Dutch
Settlement Street, Cassopolis, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at
1:30 a.m. in Cass County Medical Care Facility, Cassopolis, after
an extended illness. He was born June 8, 1918, in Mishawaka,
Indiana, the son of Melvin Earl and Delilah (Martz) Tully.
He moved from South Bend, Indiana, to Cassopolis in 1961, where
he resided until his death.
Lowell married the former Lucille Lightner
October 18, 1938, in Mishawaka, and she survives, with a son,
Lowell R. Tully Jr., and his wife, Jo of Elkhart, Indiana; a
grandson, Chad Michael Tully of Elkhart; and several nieces,
nephews and cousins. A sister and brother, Ellen Alouise
and Donald, preceded him in death.
Lowell worked until 1979 at Uniroyal
Corporation, Mishawaka, as a Laboratory Technician, and then
worked at Robinson Wood Products, Edwardsburg, Michigan, and
retired one year before his death. In his spare time, Lowell
enjoyed fishing and restoring old cars. He was a graduate of
Mishawaka High School. Lowell was proud of his military service,
having served in the United States Army during World War II in
the Combat Infantry. He was wounded in Okinawa, and served in
Japan with the occupation forces. He received two Purple Hearts,
the Victory Medal WW2 Award, and the Asiatic Pacific Theater
Ribbon with one bronze star. Lowell was a life member of several
groups, the V.F.W. Post #360, Mishawaka, American Legion Post
#26, Niles, Mich., Disabled American Veterans, and he was a past
commander of American Legion Post #303, South Bend.
A funeral service will be held Monday, April
16, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. in the Connelly Funeral Home, Cassopolis,
with Pastor Terry Neumayer of the Diamond Cove Missionary Church
officiating. Cremation has taken place, and the interment will be
in Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Military honors at the funeral
will be rendered by members of the Efton James American Legion
Post #206 and William E. Lozier V.F.W. Post #10704, both of
Cassopolis. Memorials in Lowell's name may be made to the Cass
County Hospice.
