Silas Sylvester Toombs

MISHAWAKA - Silas Sylvester Toombs, 87, of Mishawaka,
passed away Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, at his residence of natural
causes. Silas was born June 24, 1921, in South Bend, Indiana, to
the late Silas J. and Clara E. Toombs. On September 28, 1942,
Silas married the late Virginia (Campbell) Toombs in
Mishawaka, Indiana. He is survived by his son, Thomas Toombs of
Mishawaka, and his daughter, Carol (Bobby) Brown of
Mishawaka. Silas is also survived by eight grandchildren and 14
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter and
son-in-law, Nancy and Steven Knepp, as well as one
granddaughter. Silas served his country during World War II in
the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945. After his honorable discharge,
Silas was employed at Drewey's Brewery in South Bend, retiring in
1971. He then worked as a machinist at the Bendix Corporation for
several years before retiring again in 1983. In his spare time he
enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time outdoors. He also
enjoyed spending time at his lake cottage and traveling with his
wife, Virginia. Silas was a lifetime member of VFW Post #360 in
Mishawaka. In his memory, donations may be made to the Indiana
Wildlife Foundation, 4715 W. 106th St., Zionsville, IN 46077.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, October 30, in Chapel Hill Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, October 30, in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, and private interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.
