Brother Paschal (Vincent) Tomaszewski, CSC, died after a long illness on Thursday, July 30, at the age of 77 at Dujarie House, Holy Cross Brothers Center, Notre Dame, Ind. Br. Paschal was born in Gary, Ind., on July 12, 1921, one of the two sons and three daughters of Vincent and Victoria (Gerlich) Tomaszewski, and was educated in schools there.
In 1938 he entered the postulate of the Brothers of Holy Cross in Watertown, Wis., then made his novitiate year at Rolling Prairie, Ind., from Aug. 15, 1939, to Aug. 16, 1940, at which time he pronounced his first vows. He did his studies at the University of Notre Dame and on Aug. 16, 1943, made his perpetual profession of vows at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame.
Primarily a teacher of Latin and English, he was first assigned to Holy Trinity High School of Chicago, Ill., from 1944 to 1951, then to Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, Ind., from 1951-1953, and to Catholic Central High School in Monroe, Mich., from 1953-1954.
In 1954 he was transferred to the recently constructed St. Joseph's High School in South Bend, Ind., where he remained until health complications contributed to his retirement in 1990. His long association with St. Joseph's enabled him to contribute effectively not only in direct contact with a generation and more of students as a teacher, especially of English, but also in later years as a keenly knowledgeable resource and valuable contact person in the alumni office.
In retirement, first at the Holy Cross Brothers Center, then at Columba Hall on the Notre Dame campus, Br. Paschal remained active despite deteriorating health, assisting during the 1991-1992 academic year as a volunteer at the Notre Dame Archives.
Viewing is scheduled for 12 noon on Sunday, August 2, at St. Joseph's Chapel, the Holy Cross Brothers Center, Notre Dame. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated in the chapel at 2 p.m., with burial to follow. Hickey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
