Louis Alfred Tiedge

Louis Alfred Tiedge, 93, of the Hamilton Communities, New Carlisle, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, July 13, in the Hamilton Comminutes. He was born on June 9, 1913, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Anna (Fullmer) and Fred Tiedge. Mr. Tiedge was also preceded in death by two sisters, Marie and Midge, and by a brother, Carl.

 

On August 15, 1931, in South Bend, Mr. Tiedge married the love of his life, Agnes Anna Vogel, who survives. Mr. and Mrs. Tiedge were married for nearly 75 years. Mr. Tiedge is also survived by four daughters, Delores (Bill) Hutches of Las Gatos, Calif., Geneva Barnes of Lady Lake, Fla., Sherry (Lanny) Kizer of Mishawaka, IN, and Debbie (John) Carlson, also of Mishawaka; 12 grandchildren, Pam Skinner, Jack Cleghorn, Nancy Chandler, Kathy Cleghorn, Judy Meidel, Michael Cleghorn, Jerry Barnes, Jim Barnes, Tim Barnes, Angela Peters, Brett Peters and Ashleigh Peters; 27 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Waltz of Lyle, Wash.; and by a brother, Fred Tiedge of Deming, N.M.

 

Mr. Tiedge retired after 40 years of service from Bendix Corporation where he was a director of industrial relations. He served on several boards including the Federal Arbitration Board, St. Joseph Regional Medical Center board of directors and the Hamilton Grove board of directors. He was a member of the Cathedral of Saint Matthew, South Bend, Knights of Columbus Ave Marie Council #5521, South Bend, the South Bend Downtown Rotary Club, the Bendix Retirees Club and the American Legion. He was involved with the United Way, Real Services, was an advisor for the Easter Seals, and was a director for Workforce Development of the City of South Bend.

 

Mr. Tiedge was a family man who truly loved his wife, his four beautiful daughters and their spouses, and all of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He provided vacations for his family and made sure that he attended makeup Rotary meetings while he was on his travels. He enjoyed walking the beach in Florida and collecting sea shells, and fishing with his wife, Agnes, brother, Carl, and sister-in-law, Helen. He loved dogs, picking apples and strawberries, and surprising his family with cinnamon rolls. He was a man who truly enjoyed his job and would do anything to help a person in need. Mr. Tiedge was a great man and will be missed by all of those whose lives he touched.

 

Services for Mr. Tiedge will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home, were a parish Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Michael Heintz, pastor of the Cathedral of Saint Matthew. Burial will be at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Indiana.
