MISHAWAKA - Gerald F. Thornton, 63, of Washington Street, died at 3:40 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph's Medical Center after an illness. Mr. Thornton was the former owner/operator of Jerry's Grill for 20 years and former employee of Syndicated Glass, Middlebury. He was born Sept. 27, 1930, in Boston and lived in Mishawaka most of his life. On Jan. 22, 1955, in Indianapolis, he married Bettie M. Steely. She died Jan. 6, 1986. He is survived by four sons, William G., Michael D., and Jeffrey E., all of Mishawaka, and Larry P. of Hanover, Ind.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Dick of Detroit; and three brothers, Robert of New York, Edmund of Philadelphia, and Richard of Edmond, Okla. A son, Timothy P., died in 1990. He was a member of Winning Warriors, South Bend; Stroke Club, South Bend; and Mishawaka-Penn Men's Democratic Club.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 N. Main St. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call two hours before services on Tuesday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to any charity.
