Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Thornton, 72, of North Fairfax Court, South Bend, died Friday evening in Memorial Hospital. Betty was born April 17, 1930, in South Bend to Sigmund and Bernice (Knapp) Lorence who preceded her in death along with a son, Sean and a daughter, Maureen.

Betty married John Joseph Thornton on June 15, 1950, he survives along with a son, Brian (Linda) Thornton of Orlando, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Kris, Kate and Keith; and a brother, Zigmunt Lorence of LaPorte, Ind.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, in St. Joseph Catholic Church (Hill & LaSalle Streets, South Bend). Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today in the HICKEY Funeral Home, 3516 E. Jefferson, 289-1000, where a rosary will be said at 3:30 p.m. Betty was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Morris Park Country Club and the Service Guild. Memorials may be made to Logan.
