SOUTH BEND - Dorothy M. (Colip) Thompson,
85, died on Friday, April 17, in her home at St. Paul's
Retirement Community, where she and her husband were charter
residents. She had resided there for over 17 years. She was a
lifelong member of the First Brethren Church. Daughter of Charles
and Maude Colip, she graduated from Central High School
where she participated in choral activities and, along with three
fellow students, represented Indiana in the National Student
Chorus. Dorothy graduated from the Northwestern School of
Nursing, completed her Bachelor's degree, and did postgraduate
work at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Ill. She served
as a pediatric nurse and supervisor during the 1950s at Memorial
Hospital. In 1934 she married Allen Ried Thompson. They were
associated with Colip Brothers Electric for over 50 years. She
was preceded in death by her husband Ried; and by her brothers,
Charles (Jane) and William (Olga) Colip. She is survived by her
sister, Mary G. "Gerry" Colip and children, Edward A.
(Karen) Thompson and Nancy Thompson (James) Norton; seven
grandchildren, Tamela Thompson Burkman, Tracy Thompson Johns,
Timothy E. and T. Anthony Thompson, and Richard K., David T. and
Amy J. Norton; and by 10 great-grandchildren, Abagail and
Jacob Norton, James and Katie Dellinger, and Clair, Mary,
Elizabeth, Timothy, Tyler and Trevor Thompson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street, with Rev. Larry Baker of the First Brethren Church of South Bend officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. today in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions be made to St. Paul's Heritage Fund for the benefit of the ecumenical chapel.
