Thomas P. Tanner, DDS, 72, passed away on Monday evening, July 19, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Ind. Dr. Tanner was born on May 30, 1927, in South Bend, to Paul and Gladys (Porter) Tanner who preceded him in death. He graduated from John Adams High School in 1945, Indiana University in 1950, and Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1953.
In 1950, he married the former Dorothy Ann Edwards of New Albany, Ind.
Dr. Tanner was actively involved with many professional and personal organizations and memberships including Indiana University School of Dentistry Alumni Association, American Dental Association, Indiana Dental Association, North Central Dental Society, St. Joseph County Dental (former president), American Society of Orthodontics, Fellowship of the International College of Dentists, Academy of General Dentistry, Greater South Bend Housing Authority Board (LaSalle Parks Homes former president), Sports Car Club of America (former executive director), Rotary Club of South Bend, Paul Harris, Phoenix Award Foundation and Grace United Methodist Church.
While completing an active duty and reserve career in the service, Dr. Tanner was honored with receiving the rank of Captain, an accomplishment he was most proud of.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dorothy Tanner; two daughters, Lori Capell of Alamosa, Colo. and Lisa Kuehn of South Bend; a son, Eric Tanner of South Bend; two grandchildren; and by two sisters, Marva Tanner of Hanover Park, Ill. and Paula Tanner Girard of Maitland, Fla.
Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time today in Grace United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today in the church with burial following in Southlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made on behalf of Dr. Tanner to Grace United Methodist Church.
