Dorothy Ann Tanner

Dorothy Ann Edwards Tanner, 75, was born in Tallahassee, Fla., on March 15, 1928, the daughter of William F. and Lucy M. Edwards. She married Thomas P. Tanner in 1950 and, following his military service, moved to South Bend, Ind., in 1956.

She is survived by two daughters, Lori Capell of Alamosa, Colo., and Lisa Kuehn of Detroit, Mich.; a son, Eric Tanner of South Bend; two grandsons, Brian and Matthew Capell; and by three step-grandchildren, Megan Hollon of Plymouth, Ind., Bob Arnold and Tony Procaccino, both currently serving in the U.S. military.

Dottie was a longtime member of the Grace United Methodist Church where she served as director of the Raggedy Ann Preschool, and as teacher of various Sunday school classes through the years from nursery school to adult. She was a Girl Scout leader while her girls were growing up. She was a board member of the Potawatomi Zoological Society and the South Bend Symphony. She was a past president and member of the Theta Gamma chapter of the Psi Ota Xi sorority and service guild, where she was instrumental in the development of Midwestern Assistance Dogs. In later years she belonged to the Second Wind group. She was an active member and served on the board of Wednesday Club. For many years she volunteered as a docent at the Northern Indian Center for History's Oliver Mansion. Dottie also served for many years on the board of the United Religious Community of Saint Joseph County. A graduate of Indiana University with a B.S. in biology, she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and the Indiana Alumni Association.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. in the Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery in South Bend. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday in the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Grace United Methodist Church, Midwestern Assistance Dogs, or to the Potawatomi Zoological Society.
