SOUTH BEND - Leon E. Szymanowski, 81, formerly of Fort
Street, passed away on July 8, 2008, in Country Care West. Leon
was born on October 7, 1926, in South Bend, to the late Leo T.
and Mary Szymanowski. He was also preceded in death by his wife
of 60 years, Bernadine. He is survived by two children, David
(Tina) Szymanowski of Evansville, IN, and Patricia (Jeffery) Fleischman
of Granger, IN; three granddaughters, Kiley Szymanowski, Erica
(Doug) Briones and Michelle Fleischman; and by a
great-granddaughter, McKenzie Fleischman. Leon served in the
United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War, and
was a member of VFW Post 1167 and the Knights of Columbus 3rd and
4th Degree. He enjoyed fishing, photography, watching the Chicago
Bears, Chicago White Sox, and Notre Dame football. One of his
favorite foods was hot dogs.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 12th, in St. Casimir
Catholic Church. Cremation will take place, with burial at a
later date. The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, that
memorial contributions be made to the Center for Hospice and
Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or
to St. Casimir Catholic Church, 1308 W. Dunham St., South Bend,
IN 46619.
