SOUTH BEND - Florence S. Szyja, 89, of St. Joseph's Care Center-West, South Bend, Ind., died at 7:10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, in the nursing home. She was born on Nov. 22, 1908, in South Bend, and she was a lifelong area resident. Mrs. Szyja was a member of St. Adalbert Catholic Church, the Rosary Sodality, Harvest House and the Felician Sisters Auxiliary, all of St. Adalbert Church. She was also a member of the Golden Cluster Club and the Grandmother's Club, both of St. Hedwig Catholic Church, and the Polish Women's Democratic and Civic Club. She was married on Aug. 29, 1930, in South Bend, as Florence S. Nitka, to Joseph J. Szyja. He preceded her in death on March 10, 1994. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Henrietta Kosiak and by two brothers, John Nitka and Stanley Nitka. Mrs. Szyja is survived by two daughters, Loraine (Tom) Dodd of South Bend and Marlene (Ron) Satkowiak of Oregon, Ohio; six grandchildren, Thomas (Lori) Dodd of Boerne, Texas, Dr. Lawrence (Mary) Satkowiak of Las Vegas, Nev., Anne (Eric) Schramm of South Bend, Suzanne Phillips of Orlando, Fla., Michael (Wendy) Satkowiak of Westerville, Ohio and Teri (Kent) Hormouth of Aliso Viego, Calif.; eight great- grandchildren; and by a brother, Clem Nitka of New Mexico.

Family and friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Services will be held at 11 a.m on Tuesday in St. Adalbert Catholic Church with entombment to follow in the Resurrection Gardens Mausoleum at the St. Joseph Cemetery.
