Thomas J. Szmanda, 60, of Iowa
Street, passed away at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 10, in his
residence. He was born to Leo and Thelma (Irvin) Szmanda,
who preceded him in death. A sister, Joan Hughes-Burger,
is also deceased.
Thomas is survived by three sisters, Jane
(Glen) Robinson, Jean (William) Cybulski and Sandra
(Ervin) Paprocki, all of South Bend, Ind.; three brothers,
James (Gloria) Szmanda, Jack (Dolores) Szmanda and Gary (Royann)
Szmanda, all of South Bend; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces
and nephews; and by two close friends, Debbie Carpenter
and Dianne Grounds, both of South Bend.
He belonged to the American Legion Post 50
and was past post commander. He served in Germany while enlisted
with the United States Army, and had traveled to Rome to see Pope
Paul VI.
Visitation will be today, Jan. 14, from 4 to
8 p.m. in the ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road.
Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday, Jan. 15, in the
funeral home. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's
choice.
