Mitchell J. Szczerba

November 10, 1911 – October 23, 1985

Mitchell J. Szczerba, 73, of 1318 N. Brookfield St., died at 6:30am today in St Joseph’s Medical Center.  Mr. Szczerba retired in 1977 from the University of Notre Dame where he was employed at the Rockne Memorial for 4½ years.

He also was a brewer and cooper at Drewrys Ltd. For 34 years.

He was born November 10, 1911, in Chicago, and moved to South Bend in 1938 from Gary.  On July 26, 1938, in Crown Point IN, he married the former Charlotte A. Haj, who survives.  Also surviving are a daughter, Lorraine Kuntz of West Chicago IL; a son, Stanley of South Bend; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11am Friday in Holy Cross Catholic Church.  Cremation will be at Riverview Cemetery.  Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9pm Thursday in Kaniewski & Sons Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 7pm.  Mr. Szczerba was a member of Coopers International, Harvest House and Senior Citizens of the church, and was an assistant scoutmaster at Holy Cross for many years.
