Jeanne A. Szakaly, 70, of Peashway
Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away after a brief illness on
Monday, Aug. 23. Jeanne, beloved wife of Dr. John S. Szakaly,
DDS, was born on Oct. 27, 1928, and graduated from Riley High
School in 1946.
Jeanne and John were married on Aug. 26,
1950. They were the proud parents of four sons, Dr. Martin R.
Szakaly, DDS, Christopher J. Szakaly, Daniel F. Szakaly and Rev.
Anthony V. Szakaly, CSC.
Jeanne had a great love of the University of
Notre Dame. She attended every home football game for almost 50
years and every basketball game since the JACC opened in 1968.
She was a long-time member of Sacred Heart Parish, Notre Dame and
served for many years as a tour guide at the Basilica of the
Sacred Heart.
Jeanne was an avid traveler and she and John
were fortunate enough to visit all 50 states and six continents.
She liked nothing better than to be with her family and friends,
especially among the priests and brothers of the Congregation of
Holy Cross. Jeanne had a deep love of history and reading, which
she passed on to her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, John; her
four sons, Marty, Chris, Dan and Tony; her mother, Harriett Huss;
her daughters-in-law, Patricia, Ruth and Siobhan; and by her
seven grandchildren, Brian, Jeremy, Kimberly, Joel, Sara, Jensen
and Gabriel, all of South Bend.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 and 7 to
9 p.m. today, Aug.25, in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in
downtown South Bend, with a wake service held there at 7:30 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 26, in
the Sacred Heart Basilica, Notre Dame, with interment to follow
at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame. Our trust is in the Lord
Jesus, so we invite all of Jeanne's many friends to join us for
these services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be
made to the St. Joseph Grade School Building Fund, 211 N. St.
Louis Blvd., South Bend, IN 46617. McGann Funeral Home is
handling the arrangements.
