Nina A. Swem

Nina Alicia (Palmer) Swem, 94, resident of Rio Rancho and Corrales, N.M., the last ten years, formerly of South Bend and Mishawaka, Ind., passed away on Feb. 25, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, T. Dale Swem. She is survived by a son, Dr. Thomas W. Swem and wife, Marilyn of Corrales, and son, William D. Swem and wife, Virginia of Albuquerque, N.M.; and by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

 

She was a graduate of South Bend High School in 1924, a graduate of DePauw University, a graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington (nutrition and dietetics), and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega fraternity.

She was executive secretary for the St. Joseph County (Ind.) Tuberculosis League and later the American Lung Association, was a volunteer member of the American Red Cross during World War II, a member of the Red Cross nutrition committee, co-chairman of the Civilian Defense Committee on Nutrition, and was a member of the United Health Foundation. She was a past president of the St. Joseph County Health Council, a Board Member of the Council of Community Services, Chairwoman of the Camp Committee for the South Bend Community Fund, organized the St. Joseph County Nutrition Education Program, director of the St. Joseph County Dairy Council, and was the recipient of the YMCA Men's Club Human Relations Award (1957). She was a charter member of the State of Indiana Commission on Aging, initiated the first hobby show for older citizens and organized a hobby center for older residents. She was a member of Eastern Star and a Daughter of the American Revolution, past president of the American Association of University Women, active in Thalia Sorority, Altrusa Club, and a past president of the Auxiliary of the Hearing and Speech Center of St. Joseph County. She was lifetime member of St. Jame's Episcopal Cathedral, South Bend, president of St. Anne's Guild, and was a co-chair of the Venture in Mission for the Diocesan of Northern Indiana.

 

A memorial service was held at Pueblo Los Cerros in Corrales, N.M., and a memorial service will be held for Nina A. Swem at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, in St. Jame's Episcopal Cathedral, South Bend.
