John H. ''Jack'' Swats, 69, of Westgate Drive, South Bend, Ind., died following an illness at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24, in his residence. Mr. Swats retired as director of sales and marketing for the automotive brake division of the Bendix Corporation in 1986 after 33 years service. He was born Feb. 6, 1929, in Hinton, W.Va., and lived in South Bend from 1953 to 1985, when he moved to Gallatin, Tenn. He returned to South Bend in 1995.

His first wife, Mary Lou Swats, preceded him in death in 1983. On July 13, 1985, in South Bend, he married Jacquelyn ''Jackie'' Santuro, who survives. He is also survived by two stepdaughters, Cheryl Matthew of South Bend and Lisa Santuro of Indianapolis, Ind.; three stepsons, Tim Underwood of Long Beach, Calif., Michael Santuro of Indianapolis, Ind., and David Santuro of South Bend; eight stepgrandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth ''Betsy'' Martin of Scott Depot, W.Va.; and by a nephew, Barry Martin of Scott Depot.

Mr. Swats was a former member of the Morris Park Country Club and was a graduate of Virginia Tech University.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Christ the King Lutheran Church, 17195 Cleveland Road, South Bend, with Rev. Loren Van Oort and Dr. William Wassner officiating. There will be no visitation. Cremation will take place. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
