John E. Swanson

John E. ''Jack'' Swanson, 77, of
Greenock Drive, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 4:10 a.m. on
Sunday, July 18 in the Veterans Hospital, Marion, Ind., after an
extended illness. Mr. Swanson was born on Oct. 29, 1921 in South
Bend and resided in the Michiana area his whole lifetime.
On Aug. 10, 1992 he married Mary Phillips
in South Bend who survives. He is also survived by a
stepdaughter, Catherine M. Horvath of Mishawaka, Ind.; and
three sons, Michael J., Jeffrey R. and William E. Swanson, all of
South Bend. Also surviving are five loving grandchildren and two
step-grandchildren.
Mr. Swanson retired in 1983 from the Food
and Beverage business, having owned the former Locker Room Sports
Bar in North Village Mall, South Bend. Jack was a military
veteran having served in World War II and received the Silver
Star and the Purple Heart. He was proud to be a Marine and often
talked about his tour of duty in the South Pacific. At the time
of discharge, Jack was a U.S. Marine Sgt. Mr. Swanson was a life
time member of the Disabled American Veterans Post 303, lifetime
member of the Military Order of The Purple Heart, and a member of
the University Club, University of Notre Dame.
Visitation hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on
Tuesday, July 20 in the Hanley & Sons ''Southwest Chapel''
Funeral Home, West Ireland Road/Ind. 23, South Bend. Funeral
services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 21 in Hanley &
Sons ''South West Chapel'' Funeral Home. Burial will follow at
Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. The family request that memorial
contributions be made to the St. Joseph County Cancer Society or
to a charity of donors choice. The Hanley & Sons ''Southwest
Chapel'' Funeral Home handled services and extend heartfelt
sympathy to the Swanson family.
