Mary Alice Stuman, 91, of East
Woodside died on June 2 in Southfield Village after a brief
illness. She was born to Barton Dean and Rhoda A. (Carmichael)
Hause in Lebanon, Georgia on April 7, 1910. Mary was married to
Jack Bates Stuman in Georgia on October 11, 1920. They had three
children who died shortly after birth. Mary resided in Rockford,
IL until her husband's death in 1986. She then moved to South
Bend, Indiana and lived with her sister Cary Roach. Two
sisters, Dulcie B. Hardin and Cary E. Roach both of South
Bend, survive Mary plus two nieces, Cecil Cross of
Chattanooga, TN and June (Don) Rice of South Bend, IN and
two nephews, Rev. Louis (Jackie) Cross of Lakeland, FL., and Bob Hause
of Lebanon, Georgia. Also surviving are nine great nieces, two
great nephews, eight great- great nieces and ten great-great
nephews. A sister, Lettie Cross, and three brothers, Hugh Hause,
Lawrence Hause, and Joseph Hause preceded Mary in death. While in
Rockford, Mary worked at Amerock and enjoyed many outside
activities. She designed ceramics, crocheted bedspreads and
tablecloths, and knitted capes and sweaters. She enjoyed bowling,
playing the piano, and singing with her sisters. After she
retired, Mary and Jack traveled extensively around the world. She
was a great hostess and loved to open her home to guests. She
loved being with people and found real joy talking and playing
with children. Mary was a lovely Christian lady and was loved by
those who knew her.
Funeral services for Mary Alice Stuman will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001 in the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. Officiating will be the Rev. Louise Cross and Rev. Greg Crump. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery. Visitation for Mary will be from 2 - 4 & 6 - 8 p.m. Monday, June 4, 2001 and also one hour prior to funeral service time on Tuesday.
