SOUTH BEND - Rev. Joseph C. Stroot, CSC, 71, of Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, died at 6:05 a.m. Saturday in the house.
Rev. Stroot was ordained a priest at Sacred Heart Church on June 9, 1954. He attended Colorado A & M College and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1950. He received a degree in theology from Holy Cross College in 1954 and a master's degree in history from Notre Dame in 1962. Rev. Stroot taught school at Columbia Preparatory School in Portland, Ore. in 1955, and for almost 40 years he taught school at Notre Dame High School for Boys, Niles, Ill. He then became director of alumni relations at the school. Rev. Stroot was active in the Knights of Columbus in Chicago. He is survived by four sisters, Audrey Stein and Geraldine Griffin, both of St. Louis, Charlotte Weber of Columbus, Ohio, and Mary Ann Rice of Fenton, Mo.; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sacred Heart Basilica, Notre Dame. Burial will be in Community Cemetery, Notre Dame. Friends may call from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in Moreau Seminary chapel, Notre Dame, where a wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Hickey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to General Scholarship Fund, Notre Dame High School, 7655 Dempster St., Niles, Ill. 60714-2098.
