SOUTH BEND - Mary Elizabeth (Haney) Strasser, 87, of South
Bend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 23, in her home with
her loving children by her side. Mary loved life and people. She
was born April 18, 1920, in South Bend, and had been raised in
Roseland to the late John and Rose Ann Haney.
On June 14, 1941, she married Paul B.
Strasser, who preceded her in death on June 12, 2007. Also
preceding her was her beloved sister, Catherine (Haney) Delker.
Mary has left behind to cherish her memory daughters, Carol A.
Strasser of South Bend and Nancy J. (Patrick) Dennig of
Granger; sons, Thomas P. Strasser of North Port, FL, Charles M.
(Nancy) Strasser and Richard A. Strasser of South Bend;
grandchildren, Sherry, Stacy, Matheu, Riley and Sean; a sister,
Rosemarie Langwith of Desert Palms, CA; and a brother,
John Haney of South Bend.
Mary was a devoted and loving wife and
mother for 66 years. She graduated from Saint Mary's Academy and
went on to work at the Standard Oil Company upon graduation. As a
wonderful role model, Mary devoted most of her life raising her
children. She then worked at Notre Dame in the Administration
Building for nine years, retiring from the University in 1982
when husband Paul retired from Bendix. During their retirement
years they traveled yearly to Florida, Oregon and Colorado, and
made trips to California to visit family and friends. Mary is an
angel to all who knew her and will be dearly missed. Her children
had great admiration for her spirituality and nonjudgmental
nature. Mary loved to go to Lake Michigan and take walks at Notre
Dame with daughters, Carol and Nancy. A special thanks to
son Richard for his many years of caring, as well as sister
Rosemarie for helping care for Mary during her final months.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at
1:00 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, in Christ the King Catholic Church and
burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call in the
Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, on
Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., and a Rosary will be said at
7:00 p.m. Contributions may be made in Mary's memory to Hospice
and Palliative Care or to Christ the King School.
