Sister Kathleen Mary (Johanna Stokes), CSC, 90, died on Sunday, July 16, in Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, Ind. Sister Kathleen Mary was born on Feb. 20, 1910, to the late John Stokes and Catherine Fitzgerald Stokes of Ballyculhane, Kildimo, County Limerick, Ireland.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1928, made her first profession in 1931, and her final profession in 1934. Sister taught elementary schools in California, Idaho, Arizona and Utah from 1931 to 1983. She taught for four years at the Campus School on the Saint Mary's Campus. For 24 years Sister was principal of schools in Arizona and California. In 1983-1993 she was doing ministry to the elderly in Boise, Idaho, and Fresno, Calif. Sister retired to Saint Catherine's by the Sea, Ventura, Calif., in 1993, and then to Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. She entered into the Apostolate of Prayer and at Saint Mary's until her death.
Sister Kathleen Mary is survived by her sister, Mae O'Grady of Balingarry, County Limerick; and by a nephew, Sean O'Grady of Kilmihill, Balingarry, County Limerick, Ireland.
Wake service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 20, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, followed by interment at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
