Byron B. Stephens, 90, of West
Calvert, South Bend, Ind., passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 9, in
Regency Place, South Bend. Mr. Stephens was born on July 13,
1909, in Saltlick, Ky., to Judge and Cora Stephens. He married
the former Ruby Owens in 1927 and they lived most of their
lives in the South Bend area. Mr. Stephens retired from the St.
Joseph's County Sheriff's Department in 1968. He had been a
member of the Retired Sheriff's Association and the Senior League
of the ABC Bowler's Association. He was preceded in death by his
wife, Ruby, in 1980; by a son, Franklin Stephens in 1985; and by
two sisters, Maude Dotson and Pearl Kantz. He is
survived by two sons, Hershell Stephens of LaPorte, Ind., and
William Stephens of South Bend; three daughters, Aileen Ashbrook
of South Bend, Maxine Ferency of South Bend and Barbara
Stephens of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Elsie Joachim
of South Bend and Virgie Whittaker of San Bernardino,
Calif.; and by 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday in
the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, located on Ironwood and
Jefferson. Burial will follow in Sumption Prairie Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 11, in the
funeral home.
