Patricia Arlene Stein, 66, of
Mishawaka, Ind., passed away on Friday morning, July 7, in her
residence. She was born on Feb. 19, 1934, in South Bend, Ind., to
Ernest F. Greenwood and Arlene Taylor. She was
preceded in death by her father and a sister, Sara Eillson.
She was married on Sept. 10, 1955, in
Granger, Ind., to Gerald Hilding Stein, who died in 1974. She is
survived by her mother, Arlene Greenwood of South Bend;
daughters, Cynthia Stein and fiance, Stephen Underwood of
South Bend, Carrie Stein of Indianapolis, Ind.; sons, Corey
(Catherine) Stein and Kevin E. H. (Bernardine) Stein, both of
Osceola, Ind.; five grandchildren, Timothy, Joseph, Ronald,
Anthony and Kyle; and by three sisters, Elsie (John) Everett
of Villa Park, Calif., Suzanne (Craig) McDonald of
LaPorte, Ind., and Deborah (Bill) Carnes of Granger. Mrs.
Stein retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation in
1984 after 19 years of service. She taught at Maple Lane,
Eggleston, Marshall and Perley Elementary Schools. She started
the blind and visually-impaired programs for the school
corporation. She graduated from Kalamazoo College in 1956 with a
BA in education, and received her MA in 1973 from Michigan State
University. She was a member of PSI-IOTA-XI sorority, belonged to
Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, and attended Harris Prairie and
Northway Church of Christ, the Progress Club, Toastmasters
International, MSU and Kalamazoo College Alumni Associations, the
DAR Sculyer Colfax Chapter, A.C.B.L. bridge league, A.A.U.W., the
Multiple Sclerosis Society, was a volunteer of the year in 1998
at the Logan Center, and was a member of the Laubauch Tutor
Trainer Literacy Council.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on
Thursday, July 13, in the Harris Prairie Church of Christ, with
Rev. Edgar Erskin officiating. Burial will follow at the Harris
Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
today in the Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Logan Center or
to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
