MISHAWAKA - Vertsel J. "Jay" Steinbaugh, 81, passed
away at home with family by his side on Tuesday, January 5. Jay
was born on December 10, 1928, in Mishawaka, to Oscar and Martha
(Britz) Steinbaugh. He was preceded in death by his parents; a
son, Brian; and three brothers, Lucian, Edgar and Byron. On March
18, 1950, in South Bend, Jay married the former Evelyn R.
Schosker. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn; daughters, Christine
(Andres) Meyer of Lafayette, IN, and Karen (Art) DeWitt of
Elkhart; sons, Dennis Steinbaugh of Duluth, GA, and Bruce
Steinbaugh of Kalamazoo, MI; three grandchildren, Arthur DeWitt,
Daniel Steinbaugh and Brian DeWitt; two sisters, Patricia
(William) Correll of Mishawaka and Kathleen Sisk of Nashville,
TN; and a brother, Gerald (Linda) Steinbaugh of Goshen, IN. Jay
enjoyed model building of planes and ships, gardening, being out
in the yard with his peonies, and he was a numismatist and a
railroad enthusiast. He retired from Dodge Manufacturing in 1991
after 35 years of service Visitation will be held on Friday,
January 8th, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home,
505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. Funeral services will be held at
noon with visitation one hour prior on Saturday, January 9, in
the funeral home, with Pastor Bob Wiley officiating. Burial will
follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. In lieu of
flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for
Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN
