MISHAWAKA - Arthur Steenbeke, 92, of CountrySide Place Nursing Home, passed away at 4:40 p.m., Monday, in the nursing home after an illness. Mr. Steenbeke was born on June 4, 1904, in Lootenhulle, Belgium, and moved to this area in 1920, coming from Lootenhulle.
On Sept. 4, 1928, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, he married Augusta DeWinter. She preceded him in death on Sept. 26, 1995.
Mr. Steenbeke is survived by three daughters, Angela Weber of Mishawaka, Patricia Marsic of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Nancy Dakins of Mishawaka; five sons, Arthur Steenbeke and Joseph Steenbeke, both of Mishawaka, John Steenbeke of Elkhart, Ind., Thomas Steenbeke of Houston, Texas and William Steenbeke of South Bend; thirty-five grandchildren; forty-two great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Weille of South Bend; and a brother, Henry Steenbeke, also of South Bend. Three daughters preceded him in death, Rosemary Kamerer, Joanne Kloski and Dorothy Varda.
Mr. Steenbeke was employed by the Oliver Company for 38 years as a general foreman, retiring in 1968. He was a life member of the B-K Club, Mishawaka, Knights of Columbus, Eagles Arie 2083, Mishawaka, and the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m., Friday, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, with Rev. Robert Yast officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m.
