George Wesley Steele, 68, of 61490
Meadowlark Lane, died at 5:15 p.m. Saturday at Big Cedar Lake,
Marcellus. He retired in 1969 from the A & P Co., where
he had been a supervisor of the western district. He was
employed there for 45 years. Steele was born on Jan. 16,
1911, in South Bend and lived here all his life. On Dec.
29, 1972, in South Bend, he married Helen Peltz Gustin,
who survives. Also surviving are a son, Craig M. of San
Francisco; a grandchild, and a sister, Esther Gill Holdeman
of Elkhart.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the
Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William, with Rev. Lester Bill,
associate pastor of the Grace United Methodist Church,
officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial
Park. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday
in the funeral home. Steele was a member of the church, the
South Bend Lodge 294 F & AM, the Scottish Rite Valley of
South Bend, the Orak Temple, the South Bend Shrine Club, the
Masonic Social Club and the Phi Kappa Delta Fraternity. He
was a Navy veteran of World War II. Memorial contributions
may be made to the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children. A
masonic memorial service will be conducted at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday
in the funeral home.
