Julius Spencer

Julius "Ray" Spencer, 86,
of Generations Drive, South Bend, Ind., formerly of Sherman
Avenue, passed away on Friday, April 13, in the Ironwood Health
and Rehabilitation Center, South Bend. Mr. Spencer was born on
Feb. 27, 1915, in Logansport, Ind., to Samuel A. and Etta
(Sutton) Spencer.
He married Genevieve A. Tykes in
1941, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by
two sons, Samuel F. and Douglas R. Mr. Spencer is survived by a
daughter, Marietta G. Jackson of South Bend; five
grandchildren, Julia (Oscar) Trawick, Helen Steinhofer,
Charles Steinhofer, Edward (Barbara) Steinhofer, all of South
Bend, and Jeremy Jackson of Pennsylvania; nine
great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren, all of
South Bend; a sister, Vernie Margaret Spencer-Walker of
Claypool, Ind.; and many other friends and relatives.
Mr. Spencer proudly served in the United
States Army. He served with the 63rd Engineers Battalion for four
years. He was employed by Schilling Sales and Printing for 24
years. He was an active member of the South Bend Aerie #435
Eagles Lodge for the past 38 years. Mr. Spencer had served as
president as well as many other offices. He was active in the Boy
Scouts of America where he served as a scout leader in South
Bend, as well as serving on the St. Joseph County Civil Defense
for 20 years. Mr. Spencer was a member of Roseland Kingdom Hall
for the past three years.
The family will hold a private service for
Mr. Spencer, and a public memorial service will be held at 3 p.m.
on Saturday, April 28, at Shamrock Gardens in Foundation Center
(State Road 23), 17650 Generations Drive, South Bend, where the
Eagles will also hold a memorial service at the same time.
Hickey Funeral Home has been entrusted with
the services. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of
St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
