Sister Mary George CSC, 91, of Saint Marys
Convent died at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the convent. She was born Feb.
6, 1896, as Helen Elizabeth Sommer in Dusseldorf, Germany. She
entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross at St.
Marys on July 6, 1925, coming from Detroit. She was
received as a novice Aug. 15, 1926 and professed her vows Aug.
15, 1928. She is survived by a brother, Rev. Jospeh Sommer SJ, of
Detroit. She was an accountant and served in the business offices
of hospital from 1928 to 1948. In 1948 she was appointed a member
of the Midwest Provincial Council and served as treasurer until
1969; she served as accountant from 1939 to 1942 at St. Marys
Academy and St. Marys Convent; at St. Joseph Hospital from
1942 to 1948; at Holy Cross Hospital, Salt Lake City, Utah, and
at St. Alphonsus Hospital, Boise, Idaho. In 1969 she was assigned
to Our Lady of Holy Cross Convent and served as treasurer until
1986.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the
Church of Loretto with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery.
Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Thursday and until services
Friday at St. Marys Convent, where a wake will be at 7:30
p.m. Thursday.
