WALKERTON - Henry R. Snyder, 82, of 608 Center St., died at 12:20 p.m. Sunday in LaPorte Hospital. Mr. Snyder retired from the Chicago Fire Department after 40 years and was an Indiana State Highway director for three years. He was born April 28, 1913, in Evergreen Park, Ill., and moved to Walkerton in 1970.
On Nov. 15, 1952, in Chicago, he married Lora-Lee Nyland. She survives with five daughters, Dawn Snyder of LaPorte, Denise Doig, Dorene Lloyd, and Diane Snyder, all of Fish Lake, amd Debra Bell of Mill Creek; five sons, Richard of Chicago, Henry Jr. and Robert, both of LaPorte, Edward of Fish Lake, and Andrew of Rolling Prairie; and 18 grandchildren. A son, Steven P., preceded him in death.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, was school superintendent of St. John's Lutheran Church, LaPorte, for 20 years, and was a member of the Bible study group at Countryside Nursing Home, LaPorte, and International Association of Firefighters Local 2.
Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the church, with additional services conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1130. Cremation will take place. There will be no visitation. Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the church Sunday school.
