Alfred Snyder, II (Jan. 2, 1939 - Dec. 22, 1998)

Alfred ''Bill'' Snyder, 59, of South Bend, Ind., died on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Loyola University Medical Center of yet unknown causes.

Bill, a lifetime resident of South Bend, was a 1957 graduate of Riley High School. He was owner and editor of the Tri-County News, a family business, then worked at Bendix for many years. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred W. Snyder and Ida Elizabeth Hepler Snyder; his sister, Martha Barkdull; his brother, Wallace R. Wynn; and his former wife, Shirley A. Snyder.

Bill was a man who touched many lives. His compassion and desire to help others led to his founding of the Second Wind Emphysema Support Group in cooperation with Memorial Hospital. After a twelve-year struggle with emphysema, he underwent a double lung transplant in April at Loyola in Chicago and recovered well. The cause of his illness and death were not related to rejection or infection, and are still being explored.

Bill served in the U.S. Army, was an upstanding member of the 32nd Degree Masonic Lodge, #45, and was a member of the Moose.

Bill is survived by his wife, Rosemary Baichlay <Baichley> Snyder; his daughter, Rev. Melinda K. Snyder of Marion, N.C.; two sons, Jeffrey A. Snyder of Niles, Mich., and Dean M. Snyder of South Bend; his two brothers, James W. Snyder of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Richard W. Snyder of South Bend; and by three granddaughters, Amber LaFluer, Ashley Snyder and Ellen Anne Snyder Tutterow.

Bill spent his later years helping others, keeping fit at Health and Lifestyle, fishing, and enjoying his family and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, the Rev. Melinda K. Snyder officiating. Friends may gather at 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 319 S. Main Street, South Bend, IN 46601.
