SOUTH BEND - Scott T. Smith, 74, of South Bend, passed
away Tuesday, Sept. 16, in Memorial Hospital. He was born on June
15, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Wilfred and Jean (Hinckley)
Smith. On May 31, 1968, Scott married the former Ruth Ann Jurmu
of Carney, Michigan. Scott served his country proudly in the U.S.
Navy and received an honorable discharge in 1956. He received his
undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Michigan and
practiced tax accounting at Coopers and Lybrand from 1967-1990.
After retiring, he worked in planned giving at Hillsdale College
and at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Scott volunteered at
SCORE, a nonprofit organization offering small business advice
and training, and also volunteered at the Studebaker National
Museum. He was a member of the South Bend Economic Club, the
South Bend Country Club and the Thistle Class of Eagle Lake Yacht
Club. Scott is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Ruth Ann
of South Bend; two daughters, Diana Wade and her husband,
Gary, and Susan Kipp and her husband, Matthew; two sons,
David Smith and his wife, Linda and Paul Smith; his sister,
Carole Butler and her husband, John; his grandchildren,
Robert, Jodi, Julie, Abigaile, Hannah, Connor, Madalene, Bradley,
Erin, John and Peter; two great-granddaughters, Taegin and
Daelin; a sister-in-law, Carol Smith; and his nieces and nephews,
Susan, John, Christopher, Julie and Judy and Scott. Scott was
preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Craig Smith.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 20 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 2120 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, with Rev. Derrick Sneyd presiding. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the start of the service in the church. Burial will take place at a private cemetery in Bagley, MI. The Welsheimer Family Funeral Homes assisted with arrangements.
