SOUTH BEND - Mary "Mickey" Rand McNally Smith, 81, of
South Bend, IN, died on November 9th, 2009, after a courageous
battle with cancer surrounded by her family members. Born in
Kansas on November 8, 1928, to Lee Roy and Elda O'Neil Rand, Mary
was raised in New Richmond, Wisconsin, by Miles and Alice
McNally. She graduated from St. Catherine's College in St. Paul,
Minnesota, with a degree in nursing. Mary's biggest
accomplishments were the love and dedication she so selflessly
gave to her family. Throughout her life she was devoted to
volunteering at many local charities, including The Christ Child
Society, Muscular Dystrophy, O'Hana Heritage Foundation, Sex
Offense Staff, St. Margaret's House, South Bend School
Corporation, Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts, Corpus Christi Home and
School Association, Civitan and Special Olympics. She was a
37-year member of Corpus Christi Parish, including being a
founding member of the church's Holy Hour program. Mary will be
greatly missed and was treasured by her twin brother, Father
Michael McNally; along with her loving husband, Charles
"Lefty" Smith; her seven children, Chris Haas, Cindy
Blase (John), Michael Smith (Angie), Cheryl Ake (Wincton), Sheila
Stransky (Bob), Tom Smith (Shelly) and Mary Beth Romano (Paul);
16 grandchildren, TJ and Jenn Haas, Brendan, Nick and Clare
Blase, Brianna Eisen, Nicole Smith, Mallory and Hillary Ake,
Ellie North, Ryan Stransky, Kelsey and Brody Smith, and
Christopher, Katie and Matthew Romano; and four
great-grandchildren, Simone, Cecily and Felicity North, and
Carter Eisen. Mary was preceded in death by her son, Greg, and
her granddaughter, Therese Haas. Visitation will be held on
Thursday, November 12th, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Palmer
Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend,
IN 46635, where a Rosary will be said at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of
the Resurrection for Mary R. Smith will be held at 9:30 a.m. on
Friday, November 13th, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart,
University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN. The Smith family
