Lavone H. Smith, 93, of Countryside
Place, Mishawaka, formerly of 509 E. Eckman St., South Bend,
passed away at 4:10 a.m., Thursday, in Countryside Place. Mrs.
Smith had been head of the music department in the Shenandoah,
Iowa Schools. She was born Nov. 9, 1902, in Shenandoah and had
lived in this area since 1944, coming from Shenandoah.
On May 28, 1926, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, as
Lavone Hamilton, she married DeWitt H. Smith, who died
Oct. 8, 1984. Survivors include a niece, Jennie E. Tysor
of Riverton, Iowa; a nephew, Charles A. Hamilton of
Mishawaka; and numerous great-nieces and nephews, including
Charles A. Hamilton, Jr. of Indianapolis and Catherine H.
Caldwell of Fairfax, Calif.
Mrs. Smith was a member of First United
Methodist Church of Mishawaka, PEO Chapter X, Pi Beta Phi
Scholastic Sorority, and Mu Phi Epsilon Honorary Musical
Sorority.
Cremation will take place at Michiana
Crematory. Memorial graveside services and burial will take place
at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, in the Rose Hill Cemetery in
Shenandoah. There will be no local visitation or services.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist
Church of Mishawaka. Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St.,
South Bend, is handling local arrangements.
