LaVerne O. Smith, 89, of Mayflower
Road, South Bend, Ind., passed away after a short illness at 6:25
a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10, in the Ironwood Health &
Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Smith was born on Dec. 13, 1910, in
Greene Township, and was a lifetime resident of the Michiana
area. On Nov. 7, 1956, in South Bend, as LaVerne O. Ulbricht,
she married Clarence E. Smith, who passed away on Oct. 7, 1980.
Mrs. Smith for many years taught kindergarten at the old Greene
Township Grade School. She was also a bookkeeper for the South
Bend Bait Company and Farm Bureau Co-op. LaVerne is survived by a
sister, Jeanette (George) Hummer of South Bend, and
several nieces and nephews. She was loved and cherished not only
be her sister and brother-in-law, but also by her nieces and
nephews, church community and all who knew her. Mrs. Smith was a
member of Sumption Prairie United Methodist Church, and was a
charter member of the Green Township Homemaker's Club.
Visitation hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m.
today, Feb. 11, in the Hanley & Sons "Southwest
Chapel" Funeral Home, located at W. Ireland Road/Indiana 23,
South Bend. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday,
Feb. 12, in the funeral home, with Rev. Charles Ternet
officiating. Burial will take place at Porter-Rae Cemetery in
Potato Creek State Park, North Liberty, Ind. The family request
that all memorial contributions be made to the Sumption Prairie
United Methodist Church, 24535 West Roosevelt Road, South Bend,
IN 46614. The Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel"
Funeral Home handled arrangements and services and extend
heartfelt sympathy to the family of Laverne O. Smith.
