Hubert Brown Smith, 73, of 34th
Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 1:38 p.m. on Saturday,
July 18, at Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, South
Bend. He worked for the Studebaker Corporation and then retired
in 1992 from the Bendix Corporation. Born on May 3, 1925, in
Frankfort, Ind., to the late Homer and Zelda (Brown)
Smith, he had lived in the South Bend area most of his life.
He married on Aug. 19, 1978, in South Bend,
to Cele Kaplan, who survives. He is also survived by a
son, David E. Smith of Elkhart, Ind.; three grandchildren, Shane,
Stephanie and Morgan; two sisters, Phyllis Brooks of
Indianapolis, Ind., and Mildred Scott of Frankfort, Ind.;
and by six brothers, Eugene Smith of Indiana, Herbert Smith of
California, Royce Smith of Delphi, Ind., Kenny Smith of Indiana,
Cletus Smith and Richard Smith of Texas.
ervices will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday,
July 21, at the Palmer Funeral Home, South Bend. Burial will
follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka, Ind. Friends may call
from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Hubert was a World
War II Navy veteran stationed at Omaha Beach, a member of the
American Legion River Park Post 303, and a member of Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 360, Mishawaka, which will perform military
services at the committal service in the cemetery.
