E. Catherine Smith, 87, of North Gladstone Avenue, South Bend, Ind., died at 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, at the Healthwin Specialized Care Facility. She was born on May 22, 1910, in Rensselaer, Ind., and lived in this area most of her life. She was employed by the former Ranita Grill.

On April 18, 1936, as Catherine E. Coyner, she married Edward L. Smith, who preceded her in death on April 8, 1970. Mrs. Smith was also preceded in death by a son, Robert L. Smith, who died in 1996; and by a great-grandchild. Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter, Roberta (Richard) Kovach of South Bend; a son, John Cripe of San Clarita, Calif.; and by five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday in the funeral home, with burial to follow in Highland Cemetery.
