SOUTH BEND - DeVerl W. Smith, 74, of Salem Drive, died at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Hospital of natural causes. Mr. Smith retired in 1970 from Associates of South Bend and formerly was an employee of Studebaker Corp. He was born April 22, 1921, in Rochester.

On July 4, 1941, in Bunker Hill, Ind., he married Barbara R. Kronewitter. She died Nov. 17, 1985. He is survived by two sons, DeVerl M. of Cassopolis and Gary K. of South Bend; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
