Vicki C. Smithberger, 47, of Old Farm Road, Granger, Ind., died at 10:50 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in Memorial Hospital, following a lengthy, courageous battle with breast cancer.
Vicki was born July 2, 1954, in Marietta, Ohio, to Fred V. and Lorraine Parks Combs, and had lived in the South Bend area from 1978 to 1987, and from 1997 to the present. She had lived in St. Charles, Ill., and Wexford, Pa., from 1987 to 1997.
On Sept. 15, 1973, in Marietta, Ohio, as Vicki Combs, she married Jeffrey D. Smithberger, who survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Lyndsi S. Smithberger, at home; a son, Ryan J. (Stacy) Smithberger of South Bend; a grandson, Parker Smithberger; her parents, Fred and Lorraine Parks Combs of Beverly, Ohio; and by a brother, Ron (Sue) Combs of Beverly.
Vicki graduated from Ohio University summa cum laude with a bachelor's of science degree in education in 1976. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Daniel White, DDS, in South Bend. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, a loving wife and encouraging friend. She had a warm heart that touched all those who came in contact with her. She was an amazing person who fought a hard, two-year battle with breast cancer.
Although we were not ready for her to leave, we thank God for the opportunity to know her. We are truly blessed and will miss her greatly.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1st, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today, Sept. 30th, and one hour prior to services on Monday, Oct.1st, in the funeral home.
