SOUTH BEND - Mary D. Smithberger, 89, of Wemb-ley Drive, died early Friday, September 18, 1998, in St. Joseph's Medical Center, South Bend, Indiana, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Smithberger was born on June 24, 1909 in Mishawaka, Indiana, to J.W. and Barbara (Buchheit) Myers, who preceded her in death.
On June 24, 1930, she married Professor Andrew T. Smithberger, who preceded her in death on May 6, 1989. Two brothers and a sister also preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters, Beth A. (Arthur) Pulte of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and Susan M. Smithberger of Columbus, Ohio; two sons, Thomas J. Smithberger of El Cerrito, California, and Andrew W. (Beverly) Smithberger of Elgin, Illinois; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Paul E. (Phyllis) Myers of Mishawaka, and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Smithberger was a charter member of the Ladies of Notre Dame and was active in the Christ Child Society and the Circle of Mercy. She was also a member of Sacred Heart Parish Notre of Notre Dame.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. Monday in the Lady Chapel in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart with Mass of Christian Burial to be said at 3:30 p.m. the same day, Monday, September 21, in the Basilica. There will be private family burial to follow the following day.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
