SOUTH BEND - Ruth E. Slowey, 86, residing in South Bend, IN,
passed away Saturday, January 30, 2010, at home. She was born
June 22, 1923, in Afton, NY, the daughter of Frank and Flora
Belle (Lord) Knapp. On August 12, 1950, at Notre Dame, IN, she
married Professor William E. Slowey, who preceded her in death on
October 28, 1996. She was also preceded in death by a brother,
Donald Knapp. Having lived most of her life in South Bend, Ruth
spent her career as a nurse at the Saint Joseph Regional Medical
Center and retired from the student infirmary at Notre Dame. She
was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Parish at Notre Dame. Ruth
is survived by one daughter, Anne M. Slowey of New York City, NY;
one son, Dr. Michael J. (Karin) Slowey of Mt. Pleasant, SC; three
grandchildren, Erin, Meghan and William; one sister, Helen
Shanahan of Katonah, NY; and one brother, Gordon Knapp of
Clayview, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m.
Saturday, February 6, 2010, in St. Joseph Chapel at Holy Cross
College, 54515 State Road 933 North, Notre Dame, IN. Burial will
follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame. Friends may visit
with the family from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 5, in the
Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South
Bend, and from 10:00 - 10:30 a.m. Saturday in church. Expressions
