SOUTH BEND - Lawrence J. Slater Sr., 79, passed away
Friday, October 10, 2008. Larry was born on August 10, 1929, in
South Bend, to Peter and Anna (Vukovits) Slater. He
retired from AM General in 1994 and also had been employed by
Do-All. Larry was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean
Conflict. He was also a member of the Michiana Polka Mass Singers
and a lifetime member of the Chain-O-Lakes Conservation Club.
Larry loved to work on watches and cars in his spare time. He
also loved his dogs, Notre Dame and, first and foremost, he loved
his family. On July 6, 1957, in South Bend, he married the former
Elizabeth Rogowski, who survives along with three
daughters, Jane (Dave) Lewinski and Julie Slater, both of
Lakeville, and Jill (Jim) Rogers of Grand Rapids; two
sons, Lawrence (Anne) Slater Jr. of Granger and John D. (Julie)
Slater of Elkhart; three grandchildren, Cory Lewinski, Dominic
Lewinski and Owen Slater; and a brother, Peter (Gloria) Slater of
South Bend. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, a sister,
Jane Stockberger, and by two brothers, Frank Slater and
Fred Slater.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 14, 2008, in Our Lady of Hungary Church. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue, where a Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Hungary Church, D.A.V., to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or to the donor's choice.
