SOUTH BEND - Phyllis Warner Slagle, 79, of South Bend, IN, died
of cancer at 10:41 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2010, in her home
surrounded by her loving family. Phyllis was born on June 29,
1930, in Culver, IN, and had lived in northern Indiana for most
of her life. She was the youngest daughter of Fred and Ada
Warner, who preceded her in death. Phyllis graduated from North
Liberty High School and after raising her family, earned an
undergraduate and then master's degree in Secondary Education
from Indiana University at South Bend. Phyllis taught at LaVille
High School for the duration of her teaching career and was
passionate about her profession and devoted to her students. She
proudly taught three generations of Union-North High School
students and rarely went anywhere without being recognized by
former students. On August 18, 1950, Phyllis married her husband
and sweetheart of 59 years, Richard "Dick" Slagle, who
survives. Phyllis was a loving and devoted daughter, sister and
wife, an incredible mother and the perfect grandma and
great-grandmother. She had endless energy, an unmatched capacity
for hard work, and was the heart of her family and always at the
center of reunions, parties and celebrations. Phyllis was an avid
and prolific gardener, a terrific cook and absolutely loved
dancing to Big Band swing music. She and Dick were members of the
Merri-Time Dance Club for over 20 years. She was a frequent blood
donor as well. Surviving Phyllis are her three sons, Rick (Lynne)
of North Liberty, Steve (Jill) and Mark (Aniko) Slagle of South
Bend; her six grandchildren, Stephanie (Scott) Underwood,
Christopher, Sarah, David, Victoria and Dillon Slagle, all of
South Bend; two great-grandsons, Jacob and Lucas Underwood of
South Bend; her brother, Glen Warner of Warsaw; brother-in-law,
Pete Porcher of Sevierville, TN; and sister-in-law, Ila Warner of
Delton, MI. Preceding her in death were her brothers, Howard,
Roy, Carl and Jack Warner; and sisters, Alma Bishop, Beatrice
Osborn, Hazel Roudebush and Norma Porcher. A memorial service
will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 5, in the Palmer
Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend.
