SOUTH BEND - Jane Slaby, 93, passed away at 3:30 a.m. on
Thursday, January 21, 2010, in Healthwin Specialized Care. Jane
was born on January 4, 1917, in South Bend, to the late Vincent
and Stella (Koraski) Wawrzyniak. Jane was the beloved wife of the
late Alex Slaby; loving mother of nine children, Mary Jane
(Herbert) Tekip of Port Charlotte, FL, Rose (Richard) Coverdill
of Enfield, CT, Stella (Eugene) Chlebowski of South Bend, Wanda
(William) Bain of Schaumburg, IL, Vincent (Helen) Slaby of New
Carlisle, David (Darlene) Slaby of Chattanooga, TN. She was
preceded in death by, her daughters, Carol (Larry) Friend and
Patricia Luberts; and by her son, Al (Sue) Slaby. She was
grandmother (Busia) to 17 grandchildren, Tom, Linda, Amy, Jennie,
Richard, Joseph, Scott, Kevin, Paul, Vincent, David, Lauren, Mary
Jane, Brian, Aaron, Sara and Ben; and she was great-grandmother
to 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many cousins
in Poland. Mrs. Slaby was a homemaker most of her life and
well-known for her cooking and baking, especially her apple pies
and coffee cakes. She was a member of St. Adalbert's Parish all
her life and was active in the school's parents club when her
children attended there. She also was a member of Hallers Post
for many years, along with being an active member of the PNA Club
1437, where she served as secretary and president. When she was a
manager of the PNA on Ford Street, she was in charge of the
day-to-day business of running the clubroom and special events,
cooking, weddings, Christmas parties, and chicken dinners. She
was known to have a birthday cake baked and frosted on the
birthday for each of her children, their spouses, grandchildren,
great-grandchildren and many friends. She was an avid fan of the
radio program. "Polish Hour," and at many family
gatherings, she was the leader of the "Chicken Dance."
A special Thank You to the staff at Healthwin Specialized Care
and to Fr. Ron Tripi, CSC, for the special love given to our Mom.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January
25, 2010, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road,
where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian
Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26,
2010, in St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St.
Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and
Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46636. For
those who are unable to attend the funeral Mass, condolences for
the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
