Our "Amazing Grace," best friend to many, Grace Reed
Shown, 81, of Holy Cross Care and Rehabilitation, died on
Thursday, Aug. 15, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center,
South Bend, Ind.
Grace was born Aug. 31, 1920, in Mishawaka, Ind. Her parents were
Marguerite and Charles Goss. Grace's mother died when she
was 16 months old and she was adopted and reared by Harriett and
William Reed.
During World War II she was married to Naval Ensign John K. Zimmerman,
and moved to Carlisle, Pa. Grace moved back to Mishawaka in 1974.
She wed the love of her life, Hugh V. Shown, on Sept. 19, 1981.
He preceded her in death.
Grace is survived by three sons, John William (Connie) Zimmerman
of New Cumberland, Pa., James (Alicia) Shown of Mishawaka and
Ronald (Carol) Shown of Columbus, Ohio; eight grandchildren,
James Zimmerman of New Cumberland, Tonya (Oby) Zimmerman of
Rehoboth Beach, Del., Thomas, David and Mary Shown of Mishawaka,
Brian Shown of San Francisco, Calif., Traci (Marion) Nicks
of Columbus and Danielle Shown of Columbus; and by three
great-grandchildren, Hunter, Harrison and Teagan of Rehoboth
Beach. She also leaves to cherish her memory a sister, Jane Meuninck
of Edwardsburg, Mich.; three nieces, Judi (Doug) Meuninck of
Abiline, Texas, Cindy (Tom) Blackburn of South Bend and
Ann (Ken) Priebe of Mishawaka; three nephews, Donald
(Glenda) Keen Jr. of Mishawaka, Thomas (Karen) Meuninck of
Walkerton, Ind., and Jim Meuninck (Jill) of Edwardsburg. Grace
was preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Jane Zimmerman and
Becky Jo Zimmerman.
Grace graduated from Mishawaka High School and the South Bend
College of Commerce, and worked for Fred J. Hums at the Mishawaka
Building and Loan (MFB), Grace was a lifetime member of the Wives
of Professional Engineers and a past president of the Harrisburg,
Pa., chapter. Upon her return to Mishawaka, at age 52, she
graduated from Ivy Tech and became a coordinator for Real
Services Nutrition Sites in St. Joseph County before retiring in
1985.
Grace was a member of the First United Methodist Church in
Mishawaka for the past 50 years. She was active in the Dorcas
Circle and the Tri Kappa Sorority. Her faith was a testament to
the many lives she touched. She flourished under the loving care
that she received at Holy Cross Care and Rehab., where she served
as president of the Resident's Council. Her many friends and
relatives rejoice in her life and know that she is happy with her
Lord.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First United
Methodist Church in Mishawaka, with visitation two hours prior to
the service. Burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery,
Mishawaka.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Methodist Church
Scholarship Fund.
