Hazel M. Short

Hazel M. Short, 93, of Riveridge Manor, Niles, Mich., passed away on Friday, March 30, in the Lakeland Medical Center, Niles. She died of natural causes.

 

Hazel was born on Nov. 30, 1907, to Asa and Hattie Ives in Mishawaka, Ind. On July 4, 1925, in Mishawaka, she married Harold B. Short, and had two daughters, Doris Casperson and Beverly (Becky) Weber. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Ralph Casperson; grandson and wife, Allen and Linda Casperson; great-granddaughter, Christina Casperson, all of Niles; and by a step-grandson and wife, Donald and Val Weber, Vancouver, Wash. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; daughter, Beverly; her parents; brothers and sisters, Russell Ives, Garland Ives, Cletis Austin, La Von Eckstein and Dorothy Bolen; and by several nieces and nephews.

 

Hazel was a member of several organizations including Delta Theta Tau National Philanthropic Sorority, St. Mary's Marathon Bridge group of Niles. She was a member of Wesley United Memorial Church, Niles.

 

She lived in the area, working for Dodge Manufacturing in Mishawaka and Crowe and Chizek, South Bend, Ind., in the accounting departments for many years. In 1953 she and her husband moved to California where she worked for Varian Associates. After the death of her husband she returned to Niles in 1982 and renewed many old acquaintances. In 1996 she entered Riveridge Manor where she was a very popular resident known for her always classy appearance, flower-decorated cane and walker, and her high-heeled shoes.

 

Her wish was to be cremated. There will be no viewing. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. (Mich. time) on Monday, April 9, 2001, in Wesley United Methodist Church, 302 Cedar Street, Niles.

Memorials may be made to the building fund of the church.
