Nancy K. Shelley, 71, of Arborwood
Living Center, formerly of Glendale Avenue, died following a
lengthy illness at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the Healthwin
Specialized Care Facility. Mrs. Shelley was born April 28, 1930,
in South Bend, Ind., to the late Carlton and Reba Kathleen (Garrett)
Flickinger, and was a lifetime area resident. She is
survived by two daughters, Maria (Terry) Tepe of Sarasota,
Fla., and Vicky (Jeff) Holland of South Bend; three sons,
Jim (Soo) Shelley of South Bend, Steve (Nanette) Shelley of
Portland, Ore., and Edward Shelley of Knoxville, Tenn.; six
grandchildren, Ann and Maggie Shelley, Sarah and Sydnee Holland,
and Katelyn and Jeanna Tepe; and by a brother, Garrett Flickinger
of Albuquerque, N.M. Nancy was a dedicated mother; her five
children were always her number one priority in every decision
she made. She was not only a mother but a great friend and a hero
to her children and grandchildren. She embraced life and always
had the most beautiful smile to share with those she knew and
cared for. Going back to school to get her master's degree as a
single parent with five children was something she did with great
tenacity and focus. Nancy received her teaching degree and went
on to touch the lives of hundreds of students over 20-plus years
of teaching - first at North Liberty High School and then Clay
High School. Nancy taught English and drama and brought her love
of the English language and her love of the theater to her
students. Nancy actively participated in the theater herself as
an actress and director in many local theater productions. Her
initial love of the theater came from her years as a member of
the South Bend Civic Theater League, as well as her roles in many
larger productions at IUSB. Nancy will be missed by everyone who
knew and loved her. She was an inspiration. She was an icon of
strength and confidence. She was a wonderful listener who did not
judge. She was a best friend. She was a grandmother. She was a
mother. She will be missed so very much. God bless you and keep
you always.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at
2:30 p.m. Saturday in Christ the King Catholic Church. Cremation
will follow at Michiana Crematory, with burial at Fairview
Cemetery at a later date.
