SOUTH BEND - Helen (Boehnlein) Shaheen, 89, of South Bend,
Indiana, and a former longtime resident of Sturgis, MI, died
Monday, Sept. 17, in her home. She was born April 19, 1918, in
Mishawaka, Indiana, a daughter to the late John and Pauline
Boehnlein, and was the last surviving of their seven children.
On June 9, 1951, she married Eli James
Shaheen in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka, Indiana. He
died September 12, 1993. Helen was an active member of the
Sturgis community and particularly enjoyed her involvement in the
Loan Guild, the Holy Angels Altar Society and the Klinger Lake
Ladies Golf Association. Helen was a wonderful hostess,
especially to the many who attended her Notre Dame tailgate
parties throughout the years. More importantly, Helen was a
nurturing and supportive mother and grandmother who will be
sorely missed and never forgotten. The family would like to thank
the staff of Southfield Village for the wonderful care and
attention they gave Helen these past few years.
She is survived by her two daughters,
Christine Ann (Martin) Broussard of Beaumont, Texas, and
Paula Jean (Jed) Eide of South Bend, Indiana; her eight
grandchildren, Emily Broussard (Patrick) Nash, Benjamin
Broussard, Claire Broussard, Jeffrey Broussard, Laura Broussard,
Quinn Eide, Beth Eide and Ellen Eide.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to
8:00 p.m. today in the HACKMAN-Foglesong Funeral Home, 114 S.
Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, (269-651-2331). The Rosary will
be recited at 7:30 p.m. today in the funeral home. Prayers before
the Mass will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home,
followed by a procession to Holy Angels Catholic Church where the
funeral Mass celebrating the life of Mrs. Helen Shaheen will
begin at 10:00 a.m., the Rev. Father Richard Fritz, celebrant. A
graveside committal will follow the Mass at Oak Lawn Cemetery in
Sturgis. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in
Mrs. Shaheen's memory be made to the Holy Angels School, 306 S.
Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091. Envelopes are available in the
funeral home.
